Self Storage For Fall Decor? Post-Season Questions To Ask

How should you store fall décor? Autumn is over and it's time to move your seasonal decorative items into self-storage. If this is your first experience with a self-storage facility, take a look at the questions to ask before you prep or pack autumn accents.

How Soon Can You Store Fall Décor?

There's no universal time frame for seasonal storage. While some storage facility renters choose to stash fall décor immediately after they take down wreaths, garlands, or anything else, others wait until mid- to late-winter, spring, or even summer.

Choose a storage schedule that works for your family's and home's needs. If you have space to stash your autumn accents for the winter months but will need extra room in your at-home storage space after you take down Christmas or other holiday decorations, you don't need to rush. But if you have almost no usable storage space at home, you may need to move everything out as soon as possible.

What Containers Do You Need to Store Fall Décor?

This depends on the decorative items. Larger pieces, such as over-sized wreaths, may not require a box, bin, or other containers. Wrap these items in plastic or place them into new, clean garbage bags. If the wreath has delicate parts or is fragile, wrap it in a towel (or use bubble wrap). Carefully place it into a larger box and tape the top closed. Things like garlands, signs, plastic pumpkins, and other similar seasonal selections can go into plastic bins. Use clear tubs to easily see what's inside.

Store deflated yard inflatables in the original packaging. If you don't have the original box or bag, place these items into large, clean garbage bags or heavy-duty totes. Keep blowers, fans, or other inflation appliances near the inflatable items in your storage unit.

What Types of Packing Supplies Will You Need?

Along with boxes, bins, bags, and totes, you'll also need protective packing supplies. These include bubble wrap, towels, packing paper, anything else that provides a soft cushion, or plastic sheeting/tarps. You may also need smaller-sized zipper baggies (for lights or fall knick knack items), packing tape, or moving quilts.

After packing fall décor, you need to label everything before you put it into storage. Blank address or name labels, pieces of duct tape, or strips of masking tape are easy options. Use a dark permanent marker to write the item's name, the season, and other information. Fragile items and breakables require clear caution labels to reduce the risks of storage-related damage. About Me

Making My Storage Unit Beautiful

After I went to my storage unit a few months ago to retrieve a box that was in storage, I realized that my unit was horribly messy. I couldn't find what I was looking for until I completely emptied out my unit, and then I was disappointed to find it completely crushed underneath some other boxes. I knew that I had to make things right, so I dedicated the next few weekends to organizing my unit. I went through, organized the space, and completely cleaned the unit. It was so nice to be able to find things in the space, feel like it was organized, and enjoy the unit.
